- Walking: understanding is built going from place to place, meaning learning is a journey
- You start somewhere: the starting point is the first step in every walk. In learning terminology, it is where we set the stage, shape expectations, state prerequisites and provide the starting context of the walk.
- You end somewhere: the end point or finish is where you arrive. It is the point where learning goals are achieved.
- It is guided: the creator(s) of a web walk are called guides. They are the ones taking you from starting point to finish. Every step begins with the guide stating what we are doing here and provide guidance, feedback and a point of contact. In learning speak they are the instructors or coaches.
- Step by step: along the way there are exploration steps (for example with text or more often with links to relevant web sites), reflection steps (for example with a poll question) and action steps (for example an assignment to apply or do). Walkers can mark steps complete. The order of steps is the suggested path. Nothing stops walkers from skipping steps or walking differently. Ultimately the walker walks, and the structure is offered as a suggestion rather than being enforced.
- Orientation points: along the way, some steps act as orientation points. They provide high level overview of the walk and can be compared with sections or chapters of a course.
- Merit badge: at the end of the walk, when all went well and all mandatory steps were marked complete, the walker gets a merit badge and as such recognition. In learning terminology we would probably call it a certificate.
an online learning activity on a given topic whereby people get guided along relevant web sites in exploration, reflection and action steps
I had fun doing the web walk Analytics 101 :-) A lot down to the designer who makes fun and engaging links - use of videos, music and useful relevant websites as part of the walk. I also liked the connection to facebook.
