Battle of the Bloggers: make your nominations for the graveyard of learning

This year's session of the battle of the bloggers is themed 'the graveyard of learning'. I found it appropriate to shed some light on this session on the brink of Halloween.
The learning profession is full of trends, concepts, urban legends, best practices and theoretical foundations that might have outlived their usefulness, were never right from the start or that got discredited later on.

So, do you have candidates for the graveyard of learning? Here are a few suggestions, but we are open to many more.

  • One LMS to rule them all / the big corporate or district wide learning system
  • Mobile learning content / Let's now fit it all on a tiny screen
  • Kirkpatrick evaluations / What level is heaven?
  • Learning styles / Maybe they are there, maybe not, maybe they matter, maybe not...
  • Instructional Designers / Don't we have a subject matter expert on the bench?
  • Learning for all / So dumb or ignorant people are a system failure?
  • Certifications or diplomas / A diploma full of lies that states I know the truth.
  • Research funding for learning technology / Let's burn money.
  • etc

All candidates for the graveyard of learning will go in a big hat, and more or less innocent hands will pick the next term or phrase to discuss. In 10 or 20 minutes, the panel and the audience will discuss in a more or less civilised manner, and a concluding audience vote will proclaim these either 'alive', 'death' or in an inbetween 'zombie' state. Hope you'll join! We'll have a backchannel.

PS My other sessions include:
- Pre-conference workshop 'Homo Competens - Let's talk about competent people in the network age'
- Presentation and demo of Inclusive leadership training in 3D.
