You will never arrive, so you better enjoy the journey
Tip number 9: You are never “done” building a competence. So don’t focus too much on the finish, but enjoy the journey, for that is what competence development is.
I hate to end this list of tips on a negative note, but it is only negative if you thought that there is such a thing as being “done”. Alas, there is not. Competence development is a journey that can take you far, up to a level of mastery that distinguishes you as the ultimate thought leader in that domain. Still, you need to keep up. We live in interconnected, volatile and fast changing times, remember? That also means that the competence domain you are expert in will move on, sparked by new insights and connections.
So rather than focusing on the ultimate finish, we should find you in the daily competence development journey itself and where it takes us. Not arriving is a source of frustration, the exercise of the journey itself is a source of joy.
Competence building is a never ending journey. That is the final tip number nine.
