I've posted earlier on the future of leadership and leadership development. Hans, Willem and myself had a chat recently to further flesh out the learning scenarios developed at Online Educa Berlin 2011 and see if they are equally useful for leadership and leadership development. Turns out that works too.
The mindmap below summarizes our (incomplete) work how leadership looks, feels and smells like in the possible future scenarios of BIG DATA, OLD BOY NETWORK, INCROWD and QUANTIFIED SELF.
I also played around with GoAnimate and created some (hopefully funny) cartoons to illustrate each of the four possible leadership futures.
IN-CROWD:
In the In-Crowd world with its flexible and relationship-driven work organisation, leadership in communities is purpose and value driven and people rise by their merits. The cartoon version is "Community says no".
QUANTIFIED SELF:
The Quantified Self world is all about data and flexible work. Leadership comes with proven and tracked experience. The cartoon version is "the leadership game".
BIG DATA:
In the world of big data, we are lead by dashboards and simulations. In the cartoon version that becomes 'Big Leader is Watching You'.
OLD BOY NETWORK:
This is probably the scenario closest to what we know today. It is leadership by authority, and it is planned and well organised in a hierarchy. In the cartoon version this becomes 'old, older, oldest leader'.
Great cartoons! I also think that its important to be aware of the downturns and weaknesses of each scenario. At some sort of casual intersection of these scenarios I still hope to encounter to way of leadership that works.
ReplyDeleteTrue. No scenario has only upsides. Actually, I'm wondering how sustainable the 'quantified self' scenario is on its own... Wouldn't people unite in communities to avoid the 'slavery' that could happen in the QS world and move thus up to the in-crowd world?
