Unstucking learning: metaphors (eg amplifier)

We're still trying out techniques for 'seeing with new eyes' to draft business models for corporate learning. What happened before:
Today's exercise is to find a metaphor for learning and build a business model canvas around that. Basically, complete the sentence:
"learning is like .... "
Today I sometimes have the feeling the metaphor used is "learning is like a show". We are expected to entertain/edutain people and they give us satisfaction scores at the end. Frankly, if that is the metaphor we're after, it is more entertaining and cheaper to buy our learners a ticket for Cirque du Soleil.

Let's do one example : learning is an amplifier.

When we look at learning as an amplifier, it means the learning needs to strengthen something. That something can only be what counts in corporations: the work itself. So in this metaphor learning is about 'augmenting work'. If we use this metaphor it means that:

  • the learning process needs real work as input to work 'around', so that means no one gets into the learning process if they don't have work to amplify
  • the learning process has a clear output and value: better work as a result
At my current employer CCL for example, the innovation leadership workshop is constructed in this way. Participants take a real innovation challenge into the workshop, and every activity within the workshop is about applying those insights to tackle the challenge. They come out with an action plan. This is just an example of the learning amplifier metaphor in a classical setting of a learning event, but you can apply it with 'performance consulting' and various other creative ways. To the business model canvas!
