This Friday I'll be giving a talk under the title "What we learned from our LeaderMOOC project" at my favorite conference of them all: Online Educa Berlin.
As a sneak preview, here are the slides I prepared:
This was the first MOOC I participated in and, as a result, I am encouraged by a MOOC's ability to create a community of engaged but disparate learners. From a learner's perspective, I found that there was an excellent choice and mix of media and activities.
As learners, we developed a meaningful CoP (community of practice). 86 course participants joined the LinkedIn LeaderMOOC Discussion Group (http://www.linkedin.com/groups/LeaderMOOC-5176870 and, while the group’s activity has waned since the end of the course, there is still potential for this site to help us ‘keep on learning and sharing’. Your evaluation of the MOOC’s long-term effect and impact (though, to a lesser degree, its success) might include some monitoring of this group’s activity.
I’ve now participated in two other MOOCS using different platforms. So far, I’ve found that the Canvas platform (and the way you used it) has been the most effective. While I agree that the use of peer review IS an appropriate choice, I hope that a better/more transparent system for informing participants of reviews assigned to them can be established. I appreciated the Canvas notifications for new posts to conversations selected by the participant was a great time-saver. I also liked the ability to filter discussions for ‘unread’ posts to be a great aid.
In addition, the engagement of the staff in responding to discussion posts helped us feel a real ‘connection’ to CCL. This WAS a great learning experience. Hopefully, we all derived meaningful and useful take-aways from it.
As both a teacher AND a lifelong learner, I wanted you to know how sincerely I appreciated this experience.
