Working out loud on the Game of Eggs! (1)

We are probably the same - once in a while you and me get an idea in our head that stays there for a few days or weeks and ... goes nowhere. It usually goes nowhere because we do other things such as work, life, sleep and the likes. For a week now I have this idea in my head for a game called Game of Eggs and this time I've set aside a few days to work on it in the comfort of my own home. Let's see if that makes all the difference!

I'll be more or less 'working out loud' as I'm building it. You'll find that here on the blog homocompetens.blogspot.com or on my twitter handle @bertdecoutere.

Here's where I am and how I did it:

  • I've reserved the internet domain names gameofeggs.com and gameofeggs.xyz. (Way ahead of you there!) Boy, the xyz domains are cheap! (1.5 US$ a piece where I pay 15$ per year for the .com domain)
  • Then I figured the quickest way to make a temporary website is through Google Sites. I had used it before, but there is a new version of the Google Site builder and it is now part of something they call G-Suite instead of Google Apps. All good. The new builder makes more modern looking sites but only offers a minimum of choices. Before, you could configure much more to your liking and insert all kinds of widgets. No more.
  • That's where I had to remind myself: don't over-complicate - I have that tendency. So I'm sticking with a super simple placeholder website, even though I'd like to have a full twitter feed in there instead of just the link for example.
  • The artwork will mostly be taken from a site I have a subscription on: thenounproject.com . I find they have icons and images for about anything in good quality.
  • And the actual app I'm making (oh yeah, it's an app :-) ) will be made with another site I have a subscription for: appery.io. I've been tinkering with it for a while now, so let's find out how steep the learning curve still is! (I'll be using an Ionic/Angular framework.)

OK, enough talk, let's get started!
