Who's in charge of your carriere?

Picture 4 of the 'Competent people in 10 pictures' slide show gives my view on the ownership of competence. It's a shared ownership, shared between you, your employer and the government. In this day and age (which is flatter, smaller, faster, more spiky and in the end more blurry) the prime responsible and the deciding stakeholder around the competence table is you.It used to be the employer in the golden days of corporate careers and the 'Organization Man', but those days are long gone.

So it was with a lot of interest I looked at the results of a survey conducted by Vlerick management school amongst the visitors of the job site Vacature. In a nutshell, visitors feel responsible for their own career, but few really work to shape their career actively, and also employers don't have career management high on their agenda. Some figures:
  • 81% feels responsible for their own career
  • 79% will take charge of their career and development if the employer doesn't
  • 20% thinks it's the responsibility of the employer to take care of development and career
