Reading books (survey results from Bizz)

Reading books is one possible learning activity, and as it turns out, quite a popular one amongst the readers of Bizz magazine. Who said books were dead?
Bizz is a Belgian magazine I would describe as a lifestyle magazine for the yuppies amongst us. It targets professionals, (younger) managers, the MBA audience, ... Here are some interesting numbers on (business) book reading from their summer edition:

  • 96% of respondents reads management books (this high number might be biased by the voluntary participation. Would you fill in a survey on management books if you never read one?) A minority reads only one a year (15%), but 26% reads one every month!
  • A majority (56%) takes two hours or more to read the book, so it's not just browsing the pages.
  • Interestingly, the motivation to do so is personal. 38% do it to keep up with their profession, 59% out of personal interest. Less than a percent claim their boss insists they read the book.
  • And 47% responds the books apply to their jobs, and can be used.
  • Ebooks are not popular yet amongst this population, only 76% ever saw a digital book reader.
The flip side of reading a book is writing one. (Remember the Learn-Do-Share credo?) Writing books is a sharing activity in competence building, and increasingly consultants and professionals are writing. 36% of respondents dreams of once writing a book  (usually at the end of their career, to pass on the experience).
