So ... is online learning effective?

Let's end this week with the big question: is e-learning effective?

Well, not everyone will like online learning or deem it useful. We know that for example from the latest 2014 Learning Benchmark results from Towards Maturity. The voice of the learner suggests that 31% finds self-paced elearning a useful method, but 30% find online learning not relevant to their need, 26% find it uninspiring.

But does it work? After all, online learning is a delivery channel and you can probably deliver any content through any channel. Here's what I found back in a fellow blogger's posts:

E-learning is just a medium - blog post from Clive Shepherd.

E-learning <...> is a delivery channel. On balance, the evidence would suggest that the medium, the delivery channel, is much less important in determining effectiveness than the learning strategy you choose to address the task in hand (exposition, instruction, guided discovery, exploration, etc.), the social context in which the medium is used (self-study, one-to-one, group) and, indeed, the relevance and importance of the subject matter on which you are focusing. Thomas L Russell reviewed 355 research reports, summaries and papers that documented no significant differences in student outcomes between alternate modes of education delivery. It is the method that matters when it comes to effectiveness, not the medium.

Here is what an MIT study said about MOOCs: Translation: Online learning outcomes are equal, or even better than, those produced in a traditional classroom.
