Learning in micro-moments

Small is beautiful

So it turns out size does matter, and the ideal size is small. You can notice it all around: most popular video lengths these days are 5 minutes or less, we eat miniature vegetables, we work on tiny habits and we communicate in tweetable sentences.

In the field of learning it's not just about small, it's about micro. I guess the first term to use 'micro' was micro-credentials. Now all the rage is about micro-learning nuggets. The problem with that is that once again we (over)focus on learning through content. That led me to think: what if we expand the concept of micro moments beyond learning through content? What if we add other goodies we know are key ingredients of effective learning, like feedback, spaced practice, etc.?

Can we see learning as a series of micro-moments?

  • Micro-content: the learning nuggets that are out there on platforms such as SkillPill, LinkedIn Learning and others, of short duration.
  • Micro-credentials: for example the badges from OpenBadges.org
  • Micro-feedback
  • Micro-goal
  • Micro-practice
  • Micro-advice
  • Micro-coaching
  • Micro-motivation
  • Micro-assessment
  • Micro-reflection
  • ...

In a way, that makes learning a process that hops from 'moment' to 'moment' like in a network of moments. I'll explore this thought further in future posts.
